I've heard multiple rumors that a game series is being worked on that would be the 'three' for both Portal and HL but I don't know if that's been confirmed? Know anything about that?

It's a running joke that Valve can't count to three because of the half-life issue.
I DID hear roumers of a Left 4 Dead 3, but that was just a roumer.
