I'm going to suggest a gray dire wolf as well as a black dire wolf (which is on the list). The current dire wolves are mostly brown. Of course, no one knows what color dire wolves actually were, but we could assume that many were gray, like present-day gray wolves.

The sea lion is a mammal (a pinniped, to be exact), but it is also a heraldic figure.
The salamander is not a fish, but an amphibian. The mythological creature is normally associated with fire.

I must be thinking of a different thing. It's poisonous, and has lots of long spines on it. It's also striped. That's not a lion fish?

I knew a salamander was an amphibian. I love the little critters Even though it's been suggested already, I definitely second it. It would be interesting if there were different colored salamanders and they each had a different element to go with them. Orange for fire, of course, but maybe blue for water and green for earth?
