crossed swords

i could cross my heart
with my own shining blade
but you wouldn't let me
to you, my words are enough

small

isopods and beetle larvae
tree sprouts and river pebbles
phytoplankton and hummingbird eggs
grains of sand and water molecules
small? yes, absolutely
insignificant? not at all

short days

so many prefer
the long, warm days of summer
though i do find it beautiful
when the white ground
sparkles like the night sky
under a cold moon
