Spotted Borean Wolf #743

General

The silence and monotony of the desolate ice expanses of northern Boreus are broken only by the brilliant aurorae above and by the deep, haunting howls of the Borean wolf, a creature renowned for its ability to survive in an environment that is dark and riddled with blizzards for months at a time. Although surrounded by snow and ice, these wolves are actually found in a variety of colors, including black. Borean wolf pack dynamics are curiously fluid, with the better camouflaged wolves leading at any given time, a trait thought to make hunting more efficient. They are well-equipped with very thick fur and powerful night vision to handle the extreme cold and extended darkness. Most of the year these wolves hunt seals and similar prey, waiting patiently for them to surface at an airhole on the sea ice. Lone Borean wolves cannot survive in their homeland; the prey they eat is too large to be brought down alone, and so loners must travel long distances south to Silva or east over the mountains to Arkene for easier, smaller prey.

Egg

This pale egg is icy cold to the touch.

Hatchling

Borean wolf hatchlings are balls of rambunctious fluff, constantly getting underfoot at the Keep and poking their noses into anything interesting. They love to play and can even induce some of the lazier creatures into a game of chase. Due to their thick fur, they require cooling in the summer or they will overheat. They shed a great deal and must be brushed every day to avoid tangling and matting.

Adult

Although they form powerful and lasting bonds with their magi, a Borean wolf needs the company of its own kind to be truly happy. Loud as hatchlings, these wolves are more quiet as adults, communicating with one another through low grunts, whines, and body language. Their howls are deeper than those of other wolves, making them easily recognizable even from far away. Borean wolves are highly nomadic; they create temporary dens in snowdrifts along their way. Unless cubs have been born, they refuse to remain in one place for more than a few days a time. Once a year, whole packs of these wolves make the trek across Boreus to Migration Central to take advantage of the unusually abundant prey.
