Laetolis Beast #667

General

Laetolis beasts are most often found in old abandoned houses, ghost towns, and decaying forests where the trees are straight and white, as though the elements have made them into their own gravestones. Beasts are mostly silent, nocturnal creatures and many magi say that a sudden chill is a result of a laetolis beast walking across their grave. For this reason they are also believed to be able to predict death, and that anyone who sees one on a dark night is soon to be doomed, especially if they hear the laetolis beast's wailing, childlike cry. Not much is known about them and what is passed from community to community is more myth and legend than true fact.

Egg

This dark egg gives off a menacing aura.

Hatchling

What comes out of this egg doesn't seem to be a creature at all but a sulfuric mist, wispy and eddying around the edges. Laetolis beast hatchlings are impossible to see clearly, shrouded as they are, but magi will occasionally spot terrifying bits and pieces: glowing red eyes, long curved claws, a tail with a razor-sharp arrowhead point. They lurk in shadows and underneath furniture when a magi dares to bring them into the Keep, and though modern magi don't really believe that they smother children in their sleep, they still aren't often allowed around infants. When laetolis beasts cry, they sound remarkably childlike and there are stories passed in hushed whispers of these beasts luring unsuspecting people out into the night with their cries.

Adult

Laetolis beasts shed their sulfuric mists as adults, to reveal a surprisingly tiny, fuzzy animal with big eyes and large ears. As a method of protection, they use magic to make themselves seem frightening, as they are otherwise almost defenseless. They're experts of camouflage and seem to embrace their reputation as ghostly and extremely dangerous, gathering and raising their hatchlings in dark corners of the world. One commonly held belief is that feeding a laetolis beast during certain hours of the night will cause it to become exactly what it pretends to be: a terrifying, otherworldly beast that no magi can stand against.
