Spiny Glaber #1165

General

Spiny glabers spend most of their time beneath the ground, tunneling deep into the earth with their heavy claws. Their spiny back plates protect them while oozing an oily substance that coats their skin, keeping it clean protecting them from any sharp rocks they may encounter. This substance can be toxic if ingested, so magi are always careful to wash their hands if they come into contact with one of these creatures. Spiny glabers live in enormous hives, with tunnels criss-crossing like roads in a human city. They emerge every year when the weather grows cold to hunt and store food and useful things for the following year. They are a fearsome sight above ground. With a cunning intelligence, sharp claws and an endless appetite, a pack of glaber can quickly decimate fauna aboveground, and they are known for stealing items from nearby villages.

Egg

This soft leathery egg bulges and ripples as something moves within.

Hatchling

Spiny glabers hatch weak and helpless. Blind, unable to move, and deaf, they rely on help from others. In their hive, they would be cared for by the adult glabers until their spines grew in and they were able to move on their own. Luckily, this takes very little time, and as soon as they are able to travel and dig on their own, they leave the nursery tunnel to make room for the next batch of hatchlings

Adult

Spiny glabers seem fearsome and can be so in the wild, but they are surprisingly easy to train. Their pack-like mentality and hunting instinct can be trained to focus on finding items and helping magi on their travels. This doesn’t stop them from being somewhat mischievous, though, and they can be an irritation in the keep. While their hunting instinct can be curbed, they seem to be attracted to anything unusual or brightly coloured, and they will they take off with their treasure, sometimes hoarding them away in secret underground caches. Sometimes they just get bored with the items they find and drop them in random places. Many mages find their magic components, socks or quills have gone missing when they swear they put it down just a moment ago. Sometimes the pilfered items turn up on odd places – if they turn up at all.
