I think the Thestral belongs to JK Rowling. I'm not 100% sure, but after some googling I couldn't find any Thestral page not linked to Rowling's work. I hope I'm wrong though, they're awesome!

You can't see Thestrals just because you saw someone die. The death has to have settled in a made an effect on you (i.e. you have to understand what you just saw and that someone was killed).

When I saw she actually said this I figured she made the characteristics and thereby the creature, up..

Also, when you look for it on Wikipedia it redirects you to a Harry Potter creature page. While almost every "real" mythical creature has it's own page..

Egg
Appearance: Mottled tawny and brown colors with an outline of large white fangs on the shell.
Description: How strange; this egg has fangs on it.

Hatchling
Appearance: Tawny with a white under belly, bright green eyes, is as big as an adult cat. Small pearly white fangs can be seen hanging over its bottom lip
Description: You wince as your young saber tooth cat nips playfully at your ankle, but continue on your way. The small cat trots up to you side and looks up at you with green eyes, begging to be picked up. You smile and pick it up, holding its muscular body to you. Soon this tame little cat will be a fierce and frightening animal.

Adult
Appearance: The size of a small gryphon, with fangs the length of a child’s arm. Smooth tawny and white fur with very faint black stripes
Description: You watch your massive cat slowly stalk up behind a Chimera, tensing to pounce. With a playful roar, it leaps and lands on the Chimera's back, startling the poor animal. The cat is thrown from its back. You laugh as it looks up, indignant at losing its prey. With a faint snort it smoothly gets up and shakes its pelt out. The Saber Tooth walks up to you and puts its head in your lap, looking sleepy.

General: Commonly found in the Silva Forest and Jungle of Raza, Saber Tooth Cats are not very friendly to humans, Magi or not. They're not as rare as other creatures, but are elusive and hard to find. With an amazing sense of smell, these cats can smell a Magi coming from a mile away. When raised in the Keep, they are more like giant pussy cats than ferocious predators.
